Hank Dillard.

I spent thirty-one years on the buying side of a membership warehouse store. Not on the floor, and not in front of a camera — upstairs, where somebody has to decide which pallet gets the endcap, what the tag says, and how long it stays there before the category resets.

It is not a mysterious business once you have done it. A price is set by what the pallet cost, how fast it has to clear, and how much room the category has that season. Know those three and most of the store stops being confusing. Almost none of it ever gets explained to the person pushing the cart, and that is not an accident either.

I am retired now, so there is nothing keeping me from writing it down. This guide is the whole of it — how the price gets set, what to buy each month, and what I walked past every single time, even at my own store, even with the discount in my pocket.
